When a client asks how long a printed piece will last, the answer starts before the job reaches the UV flatbed printer, it starts with the UV ink. UV inks are not a single category. Rigid and flexible formulations exist for good reason, and placing the wrong ink type in the wrong environment is one of the most avoidable causes of field failures in a print shop. Understanding the difference, and knowing when your application demands extra protection, is essential knowledge for any shop working on rigid substrates.

Rigid Ink vs. Flexible Ink: Choosing the Right Foundation

Rigid Ink: Optimized for Indoor Applications

Rigid UV inks cure into a hard, inflexible film that bonds tightly to the substrate surface. This UV curable ink formulation is well suited for indoor applications where the print will not experience significant bending or temperature swings. The dense cured film delivers strong scratch resistance, cleaning resistance and sharp color reproduction, ideal for awards, retail displays, interior signage, and promotional items.
