# Eco-solvent Printing: Post-Print steps that protect your work

By  [MUTOH America Inc.](https://blogs.mutoh.com/blog/author/mutoh-america-inc)  ·   3 minute read

A great print job does not end when the media rolls off the machine. In eco-solvent printing, what happens in the minutes, hours, and days after printing often decides whether a graphic lasts five years or fails in five months. Outgassing, lamination, trimming, and handling all play a role.

This guide walks through each step so your sign shop can cut down on reprints, callbacks, and warranty claims. The costs that quietly eat the profit out of a job

## Why Post-Print Steps Matter in Eco-Solvent Printing

Eco-solvent inks work by penetrating the surface of the media, where gentle solvents carry pigment into the material before evaporating. That evaporation takes time.

Rushing a print into lamination or installation traps residual solvents inside the graphic. The result: adhesive failure, bubbling, edge lifting, and color shift, problems that show up after the job is delivered, when they cost the most to fix.

A finishing routine protects your profits as much as your prints.

## Let Prints Outgas Before Finishing

Outgassing is the process of letting residual solvents evaporate fully from the print. Skipping it is one of the most common, and most avoidable causes of failed graphics.

A few practical rules:

- Keep prints either loosely rolled or laid flat in a warm, well-ventilated area. Avoid tightly wound rolls, as they trap solvents.
- Never stack prints face to face during outgassing.
- Avoid outgassing in cold or humid environments, as evaporation significantly decreases.

### How Long to Outgas Eco-Solvent Prints?

The industry-standard answer is 24 hours minimum before lamination, and up to 48 hours for heavy ink coverage or cooler environments. Depending on coverage and environmental conditions such as airflow, this time can be reduced. Warm, ventilated conditions speed the process; cold or humid rooms slow it down.

## Laminate to Protect your Eco-Solvent Prints

On high-wear applications like vehicle wraps, floor graphics, and outdoor signage, lamination makes the difference in how long the job lasts. It shields the ink layer from abrasion, UV exposure, chemicals, and cleaning.

A properly outgassed print laminates smoothly, while a rushed one often results in issues like silvering, tunneling, and adhesive haze, all caused by trapped solvent.

## Trimming: The Final Cut That Prevents Lifting

How you cut the edge decides how long the graphic stays down, and once the blade passes, there's no second attempt. Wait until after lamination to trim final edges; this seals the laminate and print layers together and prevents lifting.

Shops running high volumes often print on a dedicated [**large format printer**](https://blogs.mutoh.com/blog/choosing-the-right-wide-format-printer) and cut on a standalone unit to keep both processes moving in parallel.

A few habits that keep edges clean:

## Handling, Storage, and Installation

Finishing does not stop at the cutter. A few habits protect prints through delivery:

- **Roll prints ink-side out** on a wide core to reduce tunneling.
- **Store finished graphics flat or loosely rolled** in a climate-controlled space, away from direct sunlight.
- **Wait before installing wraps.** Freshly laminated vinyl is easier to overstretch. A short rest period stabilizes the material.

## Choosing Equipment That Supports Good Finishing

Post-print success in eco-solvent printing starts with consistent output. An [eco-solvent printer](https://mutoh.com/product-category/eco-ultra-printers/?filters=product_cat%5B152%5D) with reliable printheads, automatic alignments and technology that reduces banding creates smoother-looking images all the time.

For shops entering the market, the [XpertJet 1341SR Pro](https://mutoh.com/product/xpertjet-1341sr-pro/) offers a strong entry point into high-quality eco-solvent work. Shops moving into larger-format work can step up to the [MUTOH ValueJet 2638X](https://mutoh.com/product/valuejet-2638x/), a 104-inch eco-solvent printe**r** built for oversized graphics

Whichever direction fits your business, a dependable [large format inkjet printer](https://mutoh.com/product-category/eco-ultra-printers/?filters=product_cat%5B161%5D) is the foundation the rest of your workflow builds on.

## Frequently Asked Questions

1. **Do I have to wait a full 24 hours before lamination?**
It depends - generally if the coverage is lower and utilizes light colors, as well as having good airflow on the print, the job can be safely laminated same-day for quick turnaround.
2. **How do I know what laminate to use with my print?**
Most vinyl products, whether cast or calendared, have a corresponding laminate model and are typically sold as a kit. Pairing up to that laminate gives the best adhesion and finishing properties.
3. **I'm struggling to get a consistent straight cut on vinyl, any tips?**
When cutting eco-solvent printed vinyl (post lamination), it's best to think of your arm as a rigid fixture being slid down the material; Wrist and elbow should be locked and tight, with the whole body moving down the cut.
4. **How loose should I unwind my vinyl roll while outgassing?**
When the roll is still on the core, place it vertically and unwind it until there is at least a 1mm gap between each "layer" of vinyl.
5. **What are the signs of under-outgassing my print?**
Not letting the print outgas usually presents itself in two very noticeable ways. First, immediately after lamination, the print will show silvering - channeling trapped gasses in-between the print film and laminate. The other major sign is that installers can feel a difference in how the material handles when conducting the installation, with the print not performing with the same characteristics as a fully outgassed vinyl.

## Deliver Prints That Last

Strong eco-solvent printing results come from the full process: proper outgassing, the right laminate, clean trimming, and careful handling. Shops that respect those steps deliver graphics that stay vibrant for years.
